It would be beneficial to the class for you to postpone the vocabulary assignment. We have done vocabulary every year that we have been in school, yet this is the first year that we have learned about Puritan writing. It would be more beneficial to the class if we skipped the vocabulary assignment, just for now of course, and moved on to a discussion about the similarities and differences between the religious philosophies of the Puritan and Pilgrim people and that of the Rationalism period (the Enlightenment). If we spend more time in class on discussions of what we have been reading and learning, we will understand it better. If we hold off on doing our vocabulary assignment, we would have more time in class for our discussion. These discussions need to be done in class because they are not something that we could necessarily bring home and do for homework, at least not very easily. The vocabulary assignment, on the other hand would be a very easy assignment for us to bring home and work on. The discussions that take place in the classroom help me to understand what we have been reading. If we shorten the discussion time by using it to do our vocabulary assignment instead, then we would not have such a good opportunity to let the reading assignment really sink into our brains. Classroom discussions help me out a lot, whereas doing my vocab assignment in class makes it hard for me to focus completely on the vocab because there are so many distractions and disruptions. When I am at home, I find it easier to focus all of my attention on the vocabulary words and therefore, I remember them more. These are a few of the reasons that I think that it would be quite beneficial for myself and the majority of my classmates, for you to postpone the vocabulary assignment until next class. I hope that you will consider my request my dear Mr. Langley.
